The Governorate of Jericho
Jericho (town): (Arabic, Ariha) The oldest known City in the World 10,000 years BC

Location:
Jericho is a green oasis in the West Bank, the modern town lies near the ancient site, located in the Jordan Valley, 30 km east of Jerusalem, 8 km west of the Jordan River and 10 km north of the Dead Sea (The lowest place in altitude on the earth). Jericho is also the lowest city in altitude on earth some 800 feet below sea level.
Its location has a very important strategy, it is the eastern gate which connects the Palestinian cities with Jordan through the King Hussein Bridge. Road traffic from Jerusalem and other cities in the Holy Land converges in Jericho, and roads continue south to the Dead Sea and the Negev.

Extent and number of inhabitants:
The area of Al-Gour is about 700 square kms. The area within the Jericho Municipality mounted to 45 square kms. Its population as estimated in 1998 including those residing in refugee camps in the surrounding area, 32713- (16491 male, 16222 female). This number of inhabitants represents 1.1% from the general total of population living in the Palestinian Territories (West Bank and Gaza Strip).
Regarding inhabitants inside Jericho, many families fled from their cities and villages as a result of the 1948 war, and they settled in the Governorate of Jericho. We can say that, many families from the whole Palestinian cities settled in Jericho.

The City contains:

  • (5) mosques, (7) churches, (1) synagogue.
  • There are (8) kindergartens teaching (636) kids.
  • There are (15) schools; divided as follows: (6) of them are state schools; with (3784) students studying there, (3) private schools with (1120) students, (3) schools run by (UNRWA) with (2611) students, Also there are (3) private industrial schools with (206) students studying in them. The number of teachers in Jericho is (303).
  • In 1997, a new branch of Al-Quds Open University has been established for the students. Its aim is to spread the academic education in the Governorate of Jericho for those who wish to continue their education, specially for those who previously lost the opportunity for political or economic reasons. (The University offers the opportunity for the students to combine both their work and studies). The number of students of the university is about (370) studying different subjects, namely: management and business, social and family development and education programs.
  • There is an old public library established in 1972.
