Agriculture:
The Jordan Valley ( Ghour Area ) is one of the most important agriculture regions in Palestine, thanks to the availability of suitable weather conditions and good irrigation water and fertile soil which enable farmers to cultivate various crops.
One should point out that the Jordan Valley is the basket of vegetables in the state of Palestine; it is a natural greenhouse which is so warm in winter that it could cover the needs of fruit and vegetables.
The Godly given weather conditions in the Jordan valley made it a vital agricultural area producing winter crops when it is almost impossible elsewhere in Palestine. Thus, it is the main source of vegetables to the hilly cold regions, which leads to competitive prices a national scale and even abroad.
Despite all that, it should be noted that there are no agricultural factories. The most important agricultural crops include citrus fruit, dates, bananas, grapes and different vegetables all of which are sold in the local market and little of it was exported to Jordan, Tunisia, France, Britain, Holland and Russia.
Nonetheless, the size of exported commodities is so small compared to the potentials because of:
- The Israeli obstacles at the crossing passages and borders and the slowdown in the inauguration of the Gaza Port as well as the increase in the transaction cost due to costly security inspections at the crossing passages and borders in addition to high cost in terms of customs clearance, shipment and transport.
- The lack of purposeful agricultural policy based on export and decreasing production costs.
- The lack of specialized export companies in the Jericho Governorate.
- There are no packing and wrapping centers to push forward the growth of this sector affecting the size of agricultural exportation.
Furthermore, this sector faces problems that restricted its growth and prosperity. The Palestinian goods can enter the Israeli market just to cover the shortage there. The agricultural sector suffers from the limiting free movement of the farmers and his products.
