GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION TOPOGRAPHY AND LAND USE:
The Bethlehem Governorate is located eight km. South of Jerusalem, in the Southern part of the West Bank. It is bounded by the Hebron District in the south west, the Dead Sea to the east and Israel to the West.
The centre mountain range of the West Bank crosses the area from south to the north in the western portion of the district. Thus, the highest elevation of approximately 900m above sea level is found in the Beit-Jala area in the West Bank. The Eastern parts of the district are characterized by sharp slopes called the Eastern Slopes where elevation drops from 900m above to 400m below Sea level in the Dead Sea are within a short horizontal distance of 25km.
The Bethlehem Governorate total area is 575 km2, includes within its boundaries four major cities, 71 Palestinian villages and hamlets, and 3 refugee camps, and 20 settlements.
